President Mahama Broadened His Diplomatic Footprint with a Yoruba Royal Honor
President John Mahama has been installed as the Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, Nigeria. The honor, one of the Yoruba world’s most prestigious chieftaincy titles, signifies a leader who actively reorganizes and elevates the global space for humanity.
This installation took place on Monday, December 15, 2025, in recognition of Mahama’s commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation. In addition to this recent accolade, Mahama already holds the distinguished title of Aare Atolase of Offa, reflecting his long-standing positive relations with Yoruba communities.
Back in October 2015, the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State conferred an honorary title on him at the palace of the Olofa of Offa. Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye I described that honour as a recognition of a leader who maintains and upholds the nobility of the kingdom.
The latest installation as Aare Atayeto Oodua is expected to further strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana, highlighting the enduring bonds between the two nations and their shared Yoruba heritage.
The Ooni of Ife, currently Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has led a reign since 2015 marked by a focus on promoting Yoruba culture, fostering interfaith dialogue, advancing socio-economic development, and deepening connections with the African diaspora.
For additional context, the event has been noted alongside reports that Nigerian groups regard Mahama as a highly respected African leader and have even requested his input on broader regional matters.
