Perth & Western Australia Weather: A Stormy Turn After a Scorching Heatwave
A dramatic shift in weather patterns is about to hit Western Australia, bringing a much-needed break from the scorching heatwave that dominated Christmas Day.
The state experienced a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 41.2C in the Perth CBD and an astonishing 44C in Geraldton, earning it the title of the hottest town on Earth. But this extreme heat was short-lived, as a cold front is now moving across the WA coast, bringing a cooler day and a risk of showers.
'It's a much cooler day today, with a cold front from the South West bringing chillier conditions to the state,' Bureau meteorologist Sarah Scully told PerthNow. 'There is a risk of showers near the coast, which will bring some much-needed relief after the hot Christmas weather.'
The northern suburbs of Perth have already started feeling the effects, with light showers beginning around 1.30 pm. The cold front is expected to bring thunderstorms to parts of the South West and the metropolitan area on Friday night and into Saturday, with potential damaging winds in coastal areas.
'There is a potential for thunderstorms hitting parts of the South West and the metropolitan area along with the cold front,' Scully said. 'Damaging winds may also occur, with people living in coastal areas advised to monitor conditions.' Wind gusts in the Perth metropolitan area are predicted to reach speeds of 46km/hr.
The cooler temperatures will persist until after New Year's, with below-average temperatures forecast until early January. So, while the heatwave has broken, it's not time to pack away the summer gear just yet.
