A Golden Globe Nod and a Plea for Cinema: Jason Isaacs's Candid Thoughts
Jason Isaacs is celebrating his second Golden Globe nomination, this time for his role in The White Lotus. He's not just thrilled; he's using the moment to shine a light on the magic of storytelling and the challenges facing the film industry.
Isaacs, known for his role as the financially-troubled and suicidal Ratliff family patriarch Tim in season three of the HBO hit, is quick to credit White Lotus creator Mike White for the nomination. He emphasized the importance of good writing, stating, "It’s a reminder when fabulous things like this happen to follow the great writing." He also noted the success of the show, highlighting how many people from White Lotus have been nominated. White's storytelling is, according to Isaacs, "phenomenal."
This isn't Isaacs's first brush with Golden Globe glory. Seventeen years ago, he was nominated for his role in the BBC political thriller The State Within. However, the ceremony was canceled due to the 2007-2008 WGA strike. He humorously recalls the experience, mentioning he'd already bought his flight, only to attend the event without the ceremony. This time, he's eagerly anticipating the chance to celebrate with his White Lotus castmates, including Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and creator Mike White.
Isaacs sees the nomination as a chance to reunite with the talented people he worked with in Thailand. He describes the awards night as a party, a celebration of the hard work and camaraderie that went into making the show. He also praises the talent of writer Jack Thorne and voices concerns about the rise of AI in the industry, saying we should "celebrate those people" who bring talent to the industry.
But here's where it gets controversial... Isaacs also shared an interesting perspective on The White Lotus. He spoke about how free Mike White is, creating an environment where anything is possible. He compares it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where creativity thrives.
He also revealed a surprising detail about the show's filming, emphasizing that, despite the glamorous setting, it was hard work. "It really was work, and it was insanely hot to start with —in a way that you just can’t imagine working in that environment."
Of course, no conversation with a White Lotus cast member is complete without a hint about the next season. Isaacs mentioned he is excited about the next installment, set in the South of France, and is already trying not to be jealous of his friends involved in it.
And this is the part most people miss... Isaacs concluded with a powerful message about the importance of cinema. He stated that the most important thing is that we keep making films and that award ceremonies exist to drive people to the cinema. He believes that "cinema is under threat."
He passionately urged people to support films by going to the theater, emphasizing the value of the shared experience. He believes that as long as people continue to support films, the industry can thrive.
