"That record just means I stayed too long," Mangum jokes, reflecting on his extended college stay. Little did he know, this extra year would present challenges and reinforce his love for the game.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his early pro career, canceling the 2020 Minor League season. However, this setback only fueled his determination. Mangum's attitude is a testament to his character: "I'll do whatever it takes to become the best version of myself," he asserts.
His style of play caught the eye of the Tampa Bay Rays, who nominated him for the Heart and Hustle Award. The Pirates, recognizing his potential, acquired him alongside Brandon Lowe and Mason Montgomery in a significant offseason move. Mangum's impact extends beyond the statistics.
Last season, he slashed an impressive .296/.330/.368 with three home runs and 40 RBIs. But his true value lies in his defensive prowess and base-running skills. With six Outs Above Average and a flawless performance in the outfield, he's a player who leaves it all on the field.
"Mangum's just a ballplayer, through and through," Lowe praises. "His heart and drive are unmatched. He gives 100% effort, whether it's a routine grounder or a wall-scraper. And his outfield play? Unbelievable!"
As a rookie, Mangum adapted to the Major League's pace, learning and improving. He aims to make a bigger impact this season, focusing on hitting with more authority, especially in advantageous counts.
"I want to add a new club to my bag while perfecting my strengths," Mangum explains. "I'll continue to find holes and run like the wind, but I'm aiming higher."
Coincidentally, Mangum has been training at the same facility as top prospect Konnor Griffin, a fellow Mississippi native. This connection hints at a potential dynamic duo for the Pirates.
"Pittsburgh is about to gain a lot of new Mississippi fans!" Mangum predicts.
While nothing is certain in baseball, Mangum's work ethic and attitude are undeniable. He promises to give his all, both on and off the field.
"I'll work hard and play hard. Those are promises I can keep," he assures.
