What's the best day to go to Goodwill? ›

Mondays are often the best day to discover newly donated goods, including unique items or top brands to look for at thrift stores. Over the weekend, many people clean out their closets and drop off bags at their local Goodwill, meaning you can be the first to explore fresh finds before anyone else!

You've probably been asked if you want to “round-up” when you are buying something at Goodwill. Those round up funds go into restricted accounts that help our programs serve needs that fall outside the scope of our regular programs.

Goodwill serves those with barriers to employment. This includes individuals with disabilities, people with limited work history, those who have experienced corporate downsizing and recipients of government support programs. Goodwill's services are designed to meet the training and placement needs of the individual.

Should I wash thrift store clothes? This one is a resounding YES. Most secondhand stores don't wash the clothes before selling them. Donations are typically washed before they're donated, but we still recommend giving them a good cleaning when you get home.

According to Goodwill, the perfect time slot to shop at thrift stores is in the morning on both Monday and Tuesday. This is because, at least as far as Goodwill is concerned, people tend to donate garage sale remnants on Sunday, so the pickings are new and fresh come early weekdays.

On occasion, we do feature merchandise in our store that is ” New” and therefore, we do very little discounting of this merchandise. In our stores these ” New” items are called ” Buy Outs” and are marked with a Purple Tag to make them easier to identify.

Goodwill makes it simple to reduce, reuse, and repurpose gently-used clothing and household goods. Best of all, thrift shopping at Goodwill supports our mission to provide job opportunities for individuals with disabilities, veterans, and others facing barriers to employment.

To round a number to the nearest 10, look at the units digit. If the units digit is 5 or more, round up. If the units digit is 4 or less, round down.

Goodwill DOES NOT accept these items

Baby gear, including furniture, car seats, strollers, high chairs, etc. Building materials: glass, doors, window frames, scrap lumber, metal, etc. Hazardous materials, including liquid cleaners, paints, detergents, fertilizers, weed killers, chemicals, motor oil, etc.

How is a thrift store different from other stores? A thrift store sells gently used clothing, furniture, and other household items at a discounted price. At Goodwill, we receive donations from the community every day, so our shelves are always stocked with tons of unique finds.

Did you know that the largest Goodwill thrift store in the world is located in Seattle? During the 1950s, Evergreen Goodwill's flagship store location expanded into the iconic store that remains today at 1400 South Lane Street in Seattle.

Stores also generally mark down items that will be on sale over the weekend on Thursday evenings. If you want to beat the rush and get to those sales items first, Thursday night's a great time for bargain shoppers to hit the malls.

Donations Arrive Daily, and Inventory Moves Fast

Goodwill stores operate on an endless cycle: people bringing donations, employees putting them on the floor and customers swooping in. The inventory changes just about every day. If you ever strike out, then try visiting another day.

Many families will still treat the Day of Goodwill as a day of rest and relaxation after the festivities of Christmas Day. For South Africans, 26 December is in the middle of the summer, so many families choose to head to the beach or their local parks and have a picnic or braai.

Frequently visit charity shops on weekdays

While you might find absolutely nothing one day, there could be something on the rails tomorrow. Weekdays are the best time for charity shopping as there's less competition for the best stuff.
