Côté, who previously reported directly to Yves Guillemot, was allegedly demoted to a new position that required relocation to France, which he refused. Instead, he was offered a role as franchise production head or a less defined position leading a 'Creative House'. When he declined and requested his severance, Ubisoft publicly announced his 'voluntary' departure, which he disputes.
The lawsuit coincides with the one-year anniversary of Assassin's Creed Shadows, the last game in the franchise to feature Côté, who has been with the series since Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in 2010. Côté had previously announced a shift to longer development cycles for the franchise, aiming for sustainability and support for games over an extended period. However, some projects, like the multiplayer spin-off Invictus and the mobile 'AAA' game Jade, remain in development limbo, while a remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is rumored for release soon.
